Diocese announces new Isle of Man Archdeacon

The Venerable Brian Smith retires in September

The new Archdeacon of the Isle of Man has been named as Canon Andrew Brown.

Canon Brown, currently canon theologian at Derby Cathedral, will also become vicar of the Parish Church of St George, Douglas.

He replaces the Venerable Brian Smith, 65, who is retiring from his twin role in September.

The Bishop of Sodor and Man, the Right Reverend Robert Paterson, said the canon brought a number of skills to his new role.

As Archdeacon, he will have responsibility for Church of England parishes across the diocese.

'Creative change'

Bishop Paterson said: "He brings skills in organisation, commitment to outreach, and experience of working with individuals and teams.

"I look forward to working closely with him in continuing to support churches in this diocese as they develop their involvement with their local communities."

Canon Brown will be officially installed in his new role in a ceremony at the Cathedral church of St German, Peel, on 15 October.

He said: "I am thrilled to be coming to work as Archdeacon with a visionary Bishop to help him deliver a programme of creative change and missional engagement in the churches.

"Having worked in Derby Cathedral which is also a Parish Church, I am really delighted to have the opportunity to continue this kind of hands on ministry as Vicar of St George."
