Seventy-two liaison officers have been appointed to help run the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man, organisers have said.

The Manx volunteers will be the first point of contact for international teams at the Games in September.

More than 1,000 competitors from 71 Commonwealth nations will compete in the seven-day sporting festival.

Co-ordinator Victoria Karran said the liaison officers would be key to the "smooth running" of the Games.

She added: "We are delighted with the appointment of the team liaison officers for the Games and we are grateful to have them on board."

The opening ceremony for the Games will be held at the newly refurbished Bowl in Douglas on Thursday 8 September.

Competitors will take part in athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby and swimming.
