Isle of Man teenagers encouraged to use their vote

Isle of Man teenagers are being encouraged to use their vote in the September general elections.

Informal information sessions called "Vote Right" will be held on 30 July and 27 August at the island's youth cafe in Lord Street, Douglas.

In 2006 the Isle of Man became the first nation in Europe to cut the voting age from 18 to 16.

Youth worker Leanne Newbold said some people may not have all the information they need to make informed decisions.

She added: "The sessions are designed for youngsters who will vote for the first time.

"We will aim to try to answer questions and encourage young people to exercise their right to vote."

Manx government statistics show in the 2006 general elections 62% of eligible teenagers turned out.

Café Laare is run by the department of education and children's youth service.
