The process of applying for for a disabled parking permit or bus pass in the Isle of Man has been "streamlined", according to the government.

With immediate effect, applicants should provide proof of receipt of social security benefits rather than visit their doctor for an assessment.

For carer passes for the disabled bus pass scheme, a social work team will make the assessment.

MHK Bill Malarky said the changes would save taxpayers about £45,000 a year.

"This is a positive example of the department adopting a more joined up and cohesive approach to meeting the needs of our community," he explained.

To be eligible for a disabled bus pass of parking permit applicants must now be either registered blind or be receiving a disability allowance, attendance allowance, income support mobility premium, a war pension supplement or use a vehicle supplied by or adapted with a grant from social services.

Applicants can contact the department of social care for more information.
