A 24-hour walking relay event in the Isle of Man has raised more than £20,000 for cancer research in the UK.

The Isle of Man Relay for Life event 2011 took place on 27 August at the National Sports Centre in Douglas.

The challenge, organised by local company Celton Manx, attracted more than 400 people who made up 29 teams.

Executive director Bill Mummery said the team spirit shown during the relay walk reflected the strength of community in the Isle of Man.

He added: "In the first Relay For Life last year, more than £44,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK and all of the money raised here will be donated to research centres in Liverpool where the majority of Manx cancer sufferers are cared for".

Organisers said so far the 2011 event had raised £21,500, but said they expected that amount to increase over the next few weeks
