Isle of Man workers earn less than people in the United Kingdom, according to official government statistics.

The Isle of Man earnings survey for 2011 showed the average Manx salary to be 0.7% below figures in the UK.

The Manx treasury statistics also show a 1.8% increase in island earnings between June 2010 and June 2011.

Male workers on the Isle of Man are earning more than women with an average weekly salary of £635, compared to £550 for women.

The highest paid people on the island work within the finance industry, with an average weekly wage of £669, while the lowest wages come from the hospitality sector with an average of £426.

The Isle of Man government said the figures were taken after sending out questionnaires to a sample of employees drawn at random from income tax records.

The UK figures were taken from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE).
