Isle of Man TT homestay scheme launched

More than 30,000 tourists visited the Isle of Man for the TT races in 2012

The Isle of Man government has launched its 'TT homestay campaign' ahead of next year's motorbike races in June.

This year around 800 homeowners on the island let rooms to TT tourists, with 3,224 beds being taken up over the fortnight.

A Tourism spokeswoman said there was a "growing demand for accommodation" during the races in June.

According to the Tourism department the majority of the island's registered accommodation is already full.

The spokeswoman said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have a spare room available and can offer guests accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis, or would consider rental of your entire property."

The registration fee is £15 and householders are exempt from tax on up to £1,500 of earnings from paying visitors.

Tourism Minister Geoff Corkish said: "This peak demand for accommodation could not be met were it not for the enthusiasm of island householders who have embraced the scheme".

Homestay can be offered during the TT for any number of nights between 25 May and 9 June 2013 and for the Manx Grand Prix between 17 August and 1 September.

All homes must be inspected by department officers before being registered for the scheme and the closing date for applications is 30 April.
