Motorists warned over importing vehicles to Isle of Man

Isle of Man residents have been warned that failure to register and license vehicles bought off-island and imported could result in a £1,000 fine.

Former hire cars bought from Manx businesses must also be registered and taxed on island.

Motorists are being consulted on plans to introduce a more rigorous system of testing to help reduce accident rates.

Vehicles which are more than three years old must be tested before registration and licensing.

In December a consultation was been launched to gauge opinion about introducing MOTs and how often checks should be made.

Director of Highways, Richard Pearson, said: "People who do not register their vehicles face a fine of up to £1,000."

According to Mr Pearson, the tax on vehicles brought across from the UK is not valid in the island and the vehicle can not be used on the island's roads on foreign plates, including UK plates.
