Isle of Man claims three-legged race world record

Almost 1,300 people completed the race in Douglas

Organisers believe the Isle of Man has reclaimed the world record for the largest three-legged race in a single venue.

They said 644 pairs completed the 200m run on Douglas beach, although the number is yet to be verified by Guinness World Records.

This is more than the previous best - 551 pairs - set by Morecambe Community High School in 2012.

Organiser Lee McLellan said the record had been "decisively smashed".

According to organisers, 650 pairs finished the race but six pairs were disqualified.

More than 3,000 people turned out to watch the race which was raising money for the Isle of Man Children's Centre.

Mr McLellan said the record "belonged" on the island, whose symbol is the Three Legs of Man.

Mr McLellan added: "It was something of a humbling experience. I don't think Douglas promenade has witnessed so many people for a single event in recent times, not even during a TT."

He added: "It was an experience for all those taking part that won't be easily forgotten."

The race was won by Simon Barber and Paul Glover.

Each pair had to run the full 200m race to be counted.

The Isle of Man previously held the record in 2009 when 468 pairs finished a race.
