Spitfire lands on Isle of Man for Sir Ben Kingsley movie

A World War II Spitfire plane has landed on the Isle of Man ahead of filming for a new sci-fi movie starring Sir Ben Kingsley.

The aircraft which was built in 1944, will be used as a prop in the production of Our Robot Overlords.

It is one of six remaining two-seaters in the world and was the second allied plane to land in France during WWII.

Producer Piers Tempest said: "We are flying the Spitfire in and it will be used in the end sequence of the film."

He added: "The Isle of Man is perfect for filming because everything is close by so in terms of moving the unit around that is really brilliant."

Robot rebels

The Spitfire, which landed at Jurby airfield at around 13:30 BST, was originally built in Castle Bromwich in 1944 as a Spitfire Mark IX.

It saw extensive operational service in Western Europe, between 1944 and 1945.

Our Robot Overlords, written by Jon Wright, is aimed at a teenage audience and also stars X-files actress Gillian Anderson.

The plot revolves around a group of youngsters who rebel against robots that threaten to take over the world.

Production began in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, earlier this month.

The film, which is being shot mainly in Castletown, is expected to be in cinemas by the Spring of 2014.
