Southern 100: Tributes paid to 'fanatical biker' David Jukes

It is understood the crash occurred during practice for the 600cc Supersport class

Tributes have been paid to a "fanatical biker" and "dedicated nurse" who was killed in a crash at the Isle of Man's Southern 100 road races.

David Jukes, 46, from Douglas, died in an accident on the approach to Ballakeighan Corner on the Billown Circuit at 19:15 BST on Monday.

Mr Jukes worked as a charge nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Isle of Man's hospital.

A Health Department spokesman said he was a "wonderful and dedicated nurse".

Mr Jukes was a regular competitor at both the Southern 100 and Manx Grand Prix and was described as being a "fanatical biker."

'True friend'

He leaves partner Cathy, who also works in the ICU at Noble's and a young son.

The accident happened on the approach to Ballakeighan Corner on the Billown Circuit

The spokesman continued: "Dave was a wonderful and dedicated nurse, a true friend, and a colleague to many staff members - and the Department's thoughts are also with those who worked with him."

The Manx Flag at the hospital has been lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.

In a statement the event's organisers said they wished to extend their "sincere condolences to his family, relatives and friends at this very sad time".

It added that they will be "carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident".

The Coroner of Inquests has been informed.

It is understood the crash occurred during practice for the 600cc Supersport class, the fourth practice session of the evening.

Practice was cancelled following the accident but the meeting will continue later with a revised schedule including the opening two races.
