Isle of Man museum for 'record-breaking' railway

A museum showcasing the history of a "record-breaking" railway on the Isle of Man is set to open in June.

The Manx Electric Railway (MER) is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for operating the oldest tramcar in the world.

The MER line runs between Douglas, on the east coast of the Isle of Man, and Ramsey in the north.

The government said the museum would be based in a building near Derby Castle Station on Douglas Promenade.

Volunteer curator Norman Dowd said: "The MER is truly unique, it can boast that it operates the oldest tramcar in the world."

Construction of the Manx Electric Railway began in the 1890s. Its season typically runs between March and August every year, although special events are arranged during the winter months.

Admission to the Manx Electric Railway Museum, which will open on 1 June, is free.
