Isle of Man weapons amnesty response 'very good', say police

Island police are calling for all illegal firearms including imitation weapons and air rifles to be surrendered

The response to an amnesty for illegal weapons on the Isle of Man has been described as "very good" by police.

More than 50 weapons including firearms, ammunition and knives have been handed in so far during the initiative which runs until 30 November.

Inspector Mark Britton said everything from "knuckle-dusters to knives can be surrendered" at designated stations.

Weapons can be handed in at Douglas, Ramsey, Castletown and Peel.

Police advised anybody who is unsure about how to check any weapon's condition to contact them at police headquarters.

Under "no circumstances" should anything with a potentially explosive content be handled or transported, added Insp Britton.

More than 150 items including swords, grenades, a pistol, ammunition and shotguns were surrendered during the last amnesty in 2005.
