About 1,500 walkers have started the 102nd Manx Telecom Parish Walk endurance event in the Isle of Man.

Entrants will need to cover 85 miles within 24 hours to complete the event.

Joint record holder Richard Gerrard is hoping to defend his title after winning last year in about 15 hours. The 2014 women's champion Janette Morgan is also taking part.

The annual event, in which participants visit all 17 of the island's parishes, was first held in 1923.

The winner is expected to finish between 22:30 and 23:00 BST with the rest managing it on Sunday morning.

'Festival atmosphere'

Amongst those looking to complete the challenge is 75-year-old Edmund Shillabeer, who is bidding to become the oldest ever finisher.

Mr Shillabeer, who runs his own veterinary practice in Plymouth, made his Parish Walk debut in 2009 at the age of 69 and finished 17th.

This year he is raising funds for the Canine Partners charity which trains assistance dogs.
