The Port Erin benefits office has closed following a "serious incident", the Manx government has announced.

The decision came after "urgent risk assessments" were carried out in the wake of a member of staff at the Ramsey office being threatened with violence.

About 80 jobseekers sign on at the Port Erin branch every two weeks currently.

The office only has one entrance, meaning there is no means of escape for threatened officers, said Member of the Legislative Council Bill Henderson.

The Ramsey branch, where the incident occurred, will remain open.
