£1.2m regeneration of Peel begins

Peel regeneration works are expected to take about 14 months to complete

Work has begun on a £1.2m project to spruce up a town on the west of the island.

The project in Peel will see new paving, new lighting and improved pedestrian access in Market Place, Douglas Street and Michael Street.

Peel MHK, Ray Harmer said: "Hopefully it will encourage more people and businesses into Peel."

The government-funded scheme, which began on Tuesday, is expected to take about 14 months to complete.

A government spokesman said: "Buff coloured natural sandstone paving is being used to enhance the area and to complement the historic buildings that line the square.

"The entrance to St Peter's Church will be opened up and made accessible for all, while pavements will be widened where possible to create more space for pedestrians."
