Manx parliament to reconsider plans to scrap free TV licences for over-75s

The Manx government is set to reverse its decision to scrap free TV licences for people over the age of 75

The Isle of Man's parliament is to consider restoring free television licences to people over the age of 75.

Last year the Manx government said such households would have to start paying the annual £145.50 fee as part of plans to save about £600,000 a year.

Plans for a U-turn, which could benefit about 5,800 households, will be studied at Tynwald's November session.

Under the proposals, a government spokesman said people would buy their licence before applying for a refund.

He added: "Subject to Tynwald approval, the new scheme will require eligible pensioners to make a claim to Social Security for a payment equal to the cost of their licence".
