The Isle of Man's Mountain Road has been reopened after gritters were deployed to deal with sheet ice.

The A18 was shut between Ramsey and the Bungalow after temperatures dropped to sub-zero on Snaefell Mountain overnight.

The Department of Infrastructure said it had deployed gritting teams to help ease the conditions on the northern stretch of the road.

It followed amber warnings for ice and snow issued by Ronaldsway Met Office.

The road is the main route between the north of the Isle of Man and its capital.

A warning had been issued for widespread icy conditions developing overnight after a drop in temperature following a period of persistent rain on Tuesday.

Conditions were expected to remain below zero on the hills throughout Wednesday with a risk of wintry showers developing later, forecasters said.
