A lift bridge in the Isle of Man's capital is set to close overnight for maintenance work, the Infrastructure Department has confirmed.

The works on the Millennium Bridge at Douglas Harbour will see one hydraulic cylinder replaced and another removed for refurbishment.

Closures in the area have been scheduled between 20:00 GMT and 04:00 from 5 until 12 February.

Traffic will be diverted along Lord Street, Bridge Road and South Quay.

A department spokesman said the cylinders were inspected 12 months ago and while they were "deemed to be in good repair", they were due for maintenance after 24 years of use.

The work was needed to "extend the life of the bridge" so it could be used for "50 years and beyond", he said.

One new cylinder, which aids the lifting motion of bridge, has been made and is set to be fitted during the project.

Meanwhile, a second will be removed and refurbished, and is expected to be refitted in late 2024 or early 2025.
