Butlin family gives St John centre a funding boost

A recreation centre in St John has received a donation of £500,000 towards a renovation project.

The Bill Butlin Charity Trust in England has given the scheme a grant of £250,000 which will be matched by the Butlin Family Charity Trust in Jersey.

The regeneration plans include providing a one-bedroom flat for the caretaker and re-design of the toilets.

They will also introduce other improvements to modernise the building and re-develop the changing rooms.

Lady Butlin said: "The Billy Butlin Memorial Hall was built in memory of my late husband and since then the facilities have been patronised by thousands of users.

"I am thrilled that the family have been able to provide further support to modernise the building."

The St John centre group still hopes to raise more money in the future as they hope to develop the youth club area.

There will also be a skateboard park opening on the site.

Andy Jehan, St John centre trustee, said: "The upgrade and expansion of the youth club is a logical extension to the range of youth based facilities that we already provide."
