Jersey politicians vote for online gambling

People could soon be able to gamble online with companies which are based in Jersey.

States members have voted in favour of regulations which would allow internet firms to be licensed in the island.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said it was an important opportunity for the island.

The e-gambling industry contributes about £50m to the Bailiwick of Guernsey's economy, according to the Alderney Gambling Control Commission.

Although concerns were raised by one deputy about gambling addiction, the proposal was passed with 38 votes in favour, four against and one abstention.
