Jersey police catch driver doing 97mph during campaign

The police have stopped a driver for doing 97mph on a Jersey road in the first week of their speeding campaign.

The awareness campaign was launched following a high number of serious injuries caused in road accidents.

In the first week of the campaign 28 motorists were booked for speeding and police officers recorded top speeds of 83, 86 and 97 in 40mph zones.

But the police said their campaign was making a difference and residents have told them average speeds have dropped.

Nearly all the drivers caught were in the known hot spots which police had announced they would be focusing on in every parish during the month of March.

The police said: "We continue to urge the general motoring public to slow down and observe the speed limits which are there for very good reason."
