Alcohol was involved in two thirds of crime claims

Two thirds of claims for compensation by victims of crime in Jersey involved alcohol according to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

The board said the claims involved either the assailant or victim drinking alcohol.

Nearly £500,000 was paid out to 60 applications for compensation in 2010.

Compensation is paid to anyone who has been injured during a crime, whether they are the victim or someone trying to prevent the crime taking place.

A total of 59 applications were received by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in 2010, slightly below average.

Of the total, 39 involved the consumption of alcohol by either the assailant or the victim.

The board said many of those incidents happened in places and situations which the victims might have avoided had they been sober or not willing to run some kind of risk.
