Jersey fire service issues wildfire alert

Jersey's Fire and Rescue service has warned people of the dangers of wildfires.

With almost no rain and record-breaking temperatures in April, the island is now officially on wildfire alert.

In 2009 there were large fires at Val De La Mare, St Aubin, Bonne Nuit, St Peters Valley, Ouaisne, Les Landes and L'Etacq.

The fire service said the mature Gorse around the island was at high risk of catching fire.

Community fire safety officer Richard Liron wants islanders to stay fire-aware this summer with more warm weather expected.

The service has set rules including not dropping matches or cigarettes, never leaving bottles in the countryside - as sun shining through glass can cause a fire - and trying not to get rid of rubbish with a bonfire.

It has also asked people having barbecues not to light them near gorse and to keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.
