Jersey unemployment figures rise by 3% in April

The number of people who are out of work in Jersey has grown.

Last month there were 1,350 people registered as unemployed, a 3% rise on the previous month and 210 more than in April 2010.

More than a fifth of people out of work are teenagers and the number of job seekers who have been looking for work for more than a year has increased by 70, and now amounts to one in seven.

There is no requirement to officially register as unemployed in Jersey.

Nine out of ten people registering as unemployed recorded their last industry of employment with Social Security.

From those figures, over half of the latest monthly increase was from people employed in retail and wholesale, motor repairs and sales, and approximately one fifth was from people whose last employment was in banking or miscellaneous insurance.
