Jersey Archive wants extra staff member

The Jersey Archive has said it wants an extra member of staff to help it clear a 25-year backlog of cataloguing and to advise the States of Jersey.

The Jersey Archive holds more than 300,000 public records, 35% of which need filing.

It said an extra worker would give it more time to advise the States, as it did with a two-year inquiry into children's care homes, from 2008.

The service achieved a high national rating for its work in 2010, it added.

It attained the highest four star standard in the National Archive's assessment programme for the first time, with scores of over 80% in preservation, conservation and for the Jersey Archive building.

When compared with similar services in the UK, Jersey Archive scores 15% higher than the average.

As a result of the archive project for the inquiry, more than 8,000 files were appraised and transferred to the Jersey Archive for secure storage.
