Jersey's goods and services tax goes up to 5%

The rate of Jersey's goods and services tax (GST) has increased from 3% to 5%.

Jersey's Treasury Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, said they needed to raise GST to fill a black hole in public finances.

The tax increased on Wednesday 1 June despite a petition against the rise, which was signed by more than 9,000 people.

It means shops and businesses will need to change their accounting systems to calculate the GST they should charge.

Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, said increasing GST was the right decision.

In May a proposition to exempt food and fuel from GST was rejected by the States.
