Petrol hits record high, says Jersey consumer council

Petrol prices in Jersey have hit a record high, according to the Consumer Council.

The average cost of petrol in Jersey is now £1.20 a litre. The Jersey Consumer Council said there was a huge difference in price between garages.

It said costs had gone up almost 14 pence a litre in a year.

Prices are due to go up again on Wednesday along with the rise in the goods and services tax (GST) from 3% to 5%.

Senator Alan Breckon, the Jersey Consumer Council Chairman, said it paid to shop around.

"There are some choices in Jersey and people should look around because the difference is really significant... it would nearly insure your car."

Elvis Romeril, director of one garage, Doubleday, said: "The fuel company charges us such a high price for the fuel, I only put 13 pence [per litre] on my petrol, plus GST which obviously knocks the prices up."
