People in Jersey warned over remote access computer scam

Islanders in Jersey are being warned about a scam where a caller, claiming to be from a telecoms company remotely accesses a customer's computer.

JT said the caller poses as a member of JT or Microsoft staff and asks to log into their computer.

The caller then tries to sell the customer unnecessary computer equipment or services.

JT says the calls are bogus and it is asking its customers to be vigilant of the scam.

Dave Newbold, chief operations and technology officer, said: "We've had several calls to our call centre alerting us to this scam, and are already working to block the number which is making them.

"We would like to formally confirm that it is not JT's policy and would never ask to remotely control their home computer, or try to sell them computer equipment."

He added: "We take any fraud such as this exceptionally seriously, and do all we can to prevent them where possible - but we would ask our customers to be vigilant and if they are in any doubt, to get in touch with us straight away."
