Jersey Home Energy Scheme 'to save £160,000 a year'

Jersey's Home Energy Scheme will save £160,000 worth of energy a year, or enough power to boil about 10 million full kettles, it has been predicted.

The Home Energy Scheme is aimed at people vulnerable to the cold.

Since 2009, more than £770,000 has been spent putting in insulation, heating controls, draught proofing and low-energy lighting.

About £1,150 is spent on each home on average, with no cost to the owner. Hundreds of people have applied.

The Environment Minister, Deputy Rob Duhamel, said it was expected the scheme would save £160,000 a year.

He added that 430 tonnes of carbon dioxide would not be pumped into the atmosphere as a result - the equivalent to flying from Jersey to London 4,300 times.
