States of Jersey to debate more than 30 topics

Jersey's government has more than 30 topics to debate in its sittings over the next fortnight.

Tuesday is the first time the States has sat since last month's elections.

There are 18 politicians in the Chamber who will no longer be States members by 14 November.

The outgoing House will be debating the 2012 Budget, and a number of other proposals including a development in St Brelade, and a £100 Jersey banknote to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

States members will also consider whether people should have the right to have a friend at a disciplinary hearing.

Outgoing deputy Paul Le Claire will ask whether Jersey monitors the output from the nearby French nuclear plant at Cap de la Hague.

The States has brought forward its meeting which was due to start next week.

The sitting will continue to Wednesday and Thursday if necessary, and then from 8 November when the 2012 Budget is due to be debated.

The new States will meet for the first time at 13:00 GMT on 14 November to elect a chief minister designate.

Then on 17 November the States will elect ministers and chairmen of committees and panels, and on 22 November the members of committees and panels will be elected.
