States agree to changes for new drivers in Jersey

New drivers in Jersey will have to pass their theory test before being allowed to apply for a provisional licence.

The committee of 12 parish constables discussed the change at a meeting and decided it should make the roads safer.

Currently learner drivers just need a provisional licence to drive on the roads under supervision ahead of their practical and theory tests.

In the States on Thursday, 29 politicians agreed to the change, with eight voting against it.

Under the plans, teenagers could apply to sit their theory test up to a year before their 17th birthday so they could still learn to drive from the day they turn 17.

The parish constables have responsibility for issuing driving licences.

The proposals were extended to moped riders who would have to pass a theory test before doing the basic training which allows them to ride around Jersey on a provisional licence.
