Jersey sports clubs receive £250,000 for travel from States

Jersey's government paid more than £250,000 to schools and sports clubs to travel overseas to compete in 2011.

The amount of public money given by the Education, Sport and Culture department was revealed in the States on Tuesday.

The minister responsible for the department, Deputy Patrick Ryan, was accused of a lack of balance between sports and culture travel funding.

Deputy Ryan said there had been less demand for travel from the cultural sector.

"The Jersey Arts Trust has a budget of £52,050 which is allocated to local arts practitioners," he said.

"My understanding is the Jersey Arts Trust receives a low demand for off island travel and only 10% of that £52,050 was allocated to off island travel."
