Jersey politicians to sit on electoral commission

States members will be allowed to sit on Jersey's new electoral commission when it is up and running.

After nearly four hours of debate, politicians voted against St Saviour Deputy Roy le Herissier's amendment to exclude them from the reform group.

Deputy le Herissier wanted to keep members out of the committee so it could be truly independent.

He lost the debate with 25 members voting against his change to 22 in favour.

States members will be back in the chamber on Wednesday to continue the debate into the electoral commission.

They will start by debating the second part of Deputy le Herissier's amendment, adding areas of reference to the commission's remit.

The commission will already be expected to look at the classes of member, constituencies and mandates, the number of States members and terms of office.

Deputy le Herissier also wants them to look at the functions of the electoral process and voting systems.
