Sales were down by 6% for Jersey's retailers and supermarkets over Christmas, according to the States statistics unit.

In the last quarter of 2011, fewer people visited King and Queen Street in St Helier.

Duncan Gibault, from the statistics unit, said sales were down for the second quarter in a row.

He said 2011 also saw the first decrease in the total value of sales for two years.
