Quarter of Jersey graduates say degree 'no help'

Up to a quarter of Jersey students who obtained a degree in the past few years admit it was no help to their career, research suggests.

Richard Plaster, Chairman of Skills Jersey, said that between 20% and 25% of local graduates said they had to retrain when they found a job.

They also claimed their university studies were "of little or no use", the Skills Jersey survey found.

Mr Plaster said islanders needed to consider their future plans carefully.

He said: "I think there are a number of options. Yes, consider your degree options and if that is right for you then go for it and do well.

"For those that don't want to go away consider local degree programmes, there are three providers.

"We are seeing an increasing number of students deciding to take that route and interestingly of those that graduated this year, they have all found work. That is a great success story."
