End of tax relief causes 400 job losses in Jersey

About 400 people have lost their jobs in Jersey because of the end of a tax relief for mail order firms, according to a senior politician.

Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR) allowed goods under £15 to be sent from the island to the UK tax free.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said most businesses had been changing the tax rather than closing, but jobs had been lost.

He said further job losses were expected over the next year.

A number of businesses in the UK blamed tax-free shipping from the Channel Islands for job losses and closure.
