Jersey sewage work ends as Enpure enters administration

A £7m sewage works project at Jersey's Bellozanne has been halted after the contractor went into administration.

The UK waste processing firm Enpure was five months into an 18 month project to replace the sludge treatment facility at the St Helier site.

As a result of the work stopping, 25 workers and sub-contractors left the site.

Sewage will continue to be treated at the existing plant, although its closure in November 2013 is in doubt.

Chris Sampson from Transport and Technical Services, which oversees the treatment of sewage in Jersey, said the sludge treatment was a major part of the overall process.

"The site remains closed at the moment, whilst we're in discussions with the administrators on how to restart the contract," he said.

Mark Hopkins, Matthew Hammond and Steve Ellis have been appointed as joint administrators.
