Jersey milk gains interest in China and Japan

Jersey Dairy has given more details on its expansion into foreign markets.

Andrew Le Gallais, from Jersey's milk marketing board, said exports to a number of countries in East Asia were being explored.

"There is interest in our products in Japan. We're currently studying a very interesting trade report on opportunities to sell to China."

Jersey began the initiative by exporting bull semen to China in 2011, and cow embryos to Argentina in 2012.

Mr Le Gallais said the entry in to Asian markets had proved successful, with local products already for sale in India.

He said: "We've exported some of our soft mix ice-cream..to a high-quality dairy wholesaler in Mumbai in India."

Jersey Dairy completed a move to new premises in Trinity in 2010, after being based in St Saviour for 40 years.

At the time, the new building was set up with an export plan in mind.

Mr Le Gallais said of the new building: "What we wanted to be able to do... was to be able to produce high quality bespoke dairy produce for discerning customers the world over."
