Vote plan for Jersey prisoners

Prisoners serving sentences in La Moye could be given the vote under plans to reform Jersey's election system.

Jersey's Public Elections Law is being reviewed and voting rights for prisoners is one area being considered.

Guernsey already allows prisoners to vote and the European Court of Human Rights has told the UK government a blanket ban is illegal.

Deputy Judy Martin, who is part of a group looking at the election law, said there were a number of issues.

The Public Elections Law Sub-Committee is also looking at citizenship, police checks and what happens to the States when a General Election is called.

Deputy Martin said that while she would be bringing it to the States, she had not decided how she would vote herself.

She said: "I was asked as a politician to look at this, I've looked at it to enable it to happen but when it comes to the States to look at the different crimes and length of sentence, I will have my vote on it."
