Plastic bottle recycling in Jersey 'being contaminated'

Plastic bottle recycling bins in Jersey are being "contaminated" by yogurt pots, fruit tubs and food trays.

Emma Richardson, recycling manager, said other items were made of lower grades of plastic and could not be recycled with the bottles.

She urged islanders to only recycle plastic bottles and dispose of other plastics in general rubbish.

Ms Richardson said the other plastics were more difficult to recycle so were not currently being collected.

She said all types of bottles could be recycled including clear, coloured and opaque, ranging from water bottles to detergent and shampoo bottles.

They can be recycled by using the Household Recycling Centre at Bellozanne, at the 18 public bring banks and through the kerbside schemes operating in St John, St Mary, St Lawrence, Trinity and parts of St Helier.
