Forecasters issue Channel Island red snow warning

Up to 10cm (4ins) of snow is expected in parts of the Channel Islands on Monday, forecasters say.

Jersey's Meteorological Department has issued a red warning for heavy snow for both Jersey and Guernsey, the highest warning for severe weather conditions.

It said sleet was expected to turn to snow, and gale to severe gale-force winds were expected to lead to blizzard conditions by mid to late morning.

Significant snow drifts were also expected, the department added.

Wind chill is expected to result in temperatures falling to -9C (19F).

Jersey's Education Department advised parents to prepare for possible school closures, and to make childcare arrangements in advance.

In Guernsey, a tide warning has been issued for the island's east coast at 06:09 GMT nine on Monday.

It was expected to cause waves breaking over sea walls, causing problems with debris on coast roads and walkways, forecasters said.
