Jersey primary school pupils to learn computer programming

Children as young as four will learn computer programming in Jersey under new plans from the education department.

From September the children will be taught a range of computer skills including software development.

The trial lessons will be led by teachers from Hautlieu school and will start at D'Auvergne and St Martin primary schools.

Hautlieu acting deputy head Stuart Hughes hailed it as "the future".

He said: "Those of a similar age to me will remember the old computers we used to have in schools, and we were writing lots of computer programmes.

"Those skills have left us for a long time and it is an opportunity for us to bring those computer programming skills back into schools."

Mr Hughes said it would involve giving young people the chance to write programmes and develop skills they needed in the future.
