Jersey hospital intensive care unit work completed

A major refurbishment of Jersey's intensive care unit, including creating more beds and an isolation room, has been completed.

Nearly £3m has been spent modernising the unit and the high dependency area at the island's hospital.

The work was done ahead of a £300m expansion and rebuild of the whole hospital.

Gary Kynman, from the Jersey General Hospital, said the upgrade work was needed and could not have waited.

About 200 patients are admitted to the intensive care unit each year, while up to 550 patients are admitted to the high dependency unit.

Nearly 13,000 patients have been treated in the facilities since it was built in the early 1990s.

Deputy Anne Pryke, Minister for Health and Social Services, said: "Having some of the latest equipment within a spacious unit gives our staff the optimum environment for delivering care to critically ill patients."
