Jersey abuse inquiry panel members approved

The panel examining allegations of historical abuse in Jersey children's homes has been appointed.

UK lawyer Frances Oldham will lead the panel supported by Sandy Cameron and Alyson Leslie, the government said.

All three were chosen after interviews held by the States Greffier Michael de la Haye, Belinda Smith - the senior legal counsel at the NSPCC - and Ed Marsden from consultants Verita.

Chief Minister Ian Gorst said the panel would start work in the new year.

The year-long £6m inquiry is tasked with investigating allegations of abuse in the island's children's homes and fostering services from 1960 to the present day.

Senator Gorst said: "It will not be a easy year for our community... we have to come to terms with what has happened in the past."
