Jersey airport runway move 'could cost £80m'

Jersey's economic minister has said that moving the airport's runway could cost "in excess of £80m".

The airport terminal, built in 1937, was declared Grade II-listed in January - despite the proximity of the runway being a serious hazard.

Planning Minister Deputy Rob Duhamel decided not to demolish the terminal but has suggested the runway be moved towards St Peter's Village.

Senator Alan Maclean said he was "disappointed" by the decision.

John Refault, Connetable St Peter, said that the ports team failed to take into account "the need to demolish many of the existing properties on the south-east of the approach line on St Peters main road".

This included the Daisy Farm complex, the new residential properties and GP surgery at La Retraite, Rue St Clement, he said.

The cost and impact of the move is still being considered by the ports team.
