Jersey lifeboat volunteer named in honours list

Nigel Sweeny has volunteered for the RNLI for 35 years

A lifeboat manager from Jersey has been made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Nigel Sweeny, 61, has been a volunteer with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for the past 35 years.

He has been described by colleagues as a "tireless, highly capable and welcoming man".

Five people from Jersey were named in the Honours list including States Greffier Michael De La Haye who was named an OBE.

Paul Boissier, the RNLI's chief executive, said: "Nigel is responsible for every aspect of operational activity at St Catherine's lifeboat station and has been at the heart of the station for 35 years.

"He does all this, cheerfully and willingly, as a volunteer, and remains an inspiration to both his crew and all those that visit the station."

Mr De La Haye was named an OBE for his work for the government and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Monsignor Nicholas France is one of five islanders named in the Birthday Honours

The head of Jersey's Catholic church, Monsignor Nicholas France, was made an MBE for his services to the faith.

Derrick Frigot has also been made an MBE in recognised of his role in island agriculture and particularly his work with the islands breed of Jersey cow.

Charity worker Jane Werrin has been honoured with a British Empire Medal for her work with Jersey Hospice and services charity Holiday for Heroes.
