Jersey politicians vote to use crime funds to buy Plemont

The headland at Plemont will be bought by Jersey's government and the National Trust for Jersey.

Members agreed to spend £3.5m, taken from the criminal confiscation fund, to return the former Pontins site at Plemont back to nature.

The rest of the £7.1m will be paid by the National Trust for Jersey.

Charles Alluto, of the trust, said Plemont was a key part of the North Coast that all should enjoy.

There was a demonstration outside the states building by environmental campaigners, and many of them filled the public gallery for the debate.

The environment minister, Deputy Rob Duhamel, argued against the proposals, saying they were not value for money.

Other members were unhappy about Treasury Minister Senator Philip Ozouf's plan to get the money from a fund of seized criminal money.
