Votes in Jersey's senatorial election will be recounted on Saturday

A losing candidate in Jersey's recent senatorial election has won her demand for a recount.

Senator Sarah Ferguson came ninth behind Senator Philip Ozouf in the race for Jersey's eight senatorial seats.

The recount means the final winners will not now be known until Saturday night.

Of 146,247 votes cast, Senator Ferguson polled 9,800, which was 262 behind Senator Ozouf's 10,062.

Eight senators, 12 constables and 29 deputies were elected to the States assembly on 15 October.

Under Jersey's election laws, a recount can be ordered if the difference between candidates is less than 1% of the total votes.

Senator Ferguson demanded the recount, saying there were "potential structural problems" with the election law.

Senator Ozouf said he hoped the result was "put beyond doubt".
