The first next generation mobile network has launched in Jersey, according to telecom company JT.

Government owned telecom company JT said the 4G network had cost £12m and would initially only be available at six sites in St Ouen.

The company plans to have it available island-wide by the summer.

Three companies won a licence to operate a 4G network in the island - Sure, JT and Airtel-Vodafone - and all hope to launch early this year.

Airtel-Vodafone is working with Nokia Networks and said the £15m upgrade would be available island-wide by April.

Peter Zunino, head of marketing at Airtel-Vodafone, said: "The launch of 4G brings exciting opportunities for Jersey consumers and businesses to transform the way they communicate with friends, family, clients and colleagues."

Sure said it was currently testing its network and hoped to have 4G available for customers from March.
